1. Throwback

We’re a generation of nostalgic folk, and there’s nothing like realizing how far you’ve come in life quite like seeing a comparison pic. You’ve probably had a camera thrown in your face yearly since your first day of Pre-K, so it won’t be hard to recreate an old pic for your senior year photo.

You can continue the tradition by adding a final “Last Day at School” photo to the heaping folder that your parents might’ve created—or the closing chapter to a pile of “First Day at School” photos.

If you have a particularly grand photo of your first day on your current school campus, you can take a photo in the same place, with similar clothes, and replicate the pose to present them side-by-side. These photos will act as bookends to your time studying and make you realize just how much you’ve grown.

For a real throwback-style senior picture, you could even replicate your parents’ senior pics. That could even begin a whole new tradition within your future family.

2. The Great Outdoors

You’re graduating, and now the world is your oyster; why not replicate that in photo form with an outdoor senior picture?

Outdoor senior picture ideas are great to show that you’ve broken free from the chains of educational institutions and that you are now old and mature enough to find yourself out in the world. There are some great places to take photos, and some will have great relevance to your studious history.

If you live in a bustling city, taking your senior photos out in the country, surrounded by nature, will be a great juxtaposition to the skyscrapers, cars, and noise that everyone is used to in your town. But on the contrary, if you already live and study in a rural environment, then taking photos in nature will help cement those memories. Make sure you prepare for different weather types; read our guide for the best conditions to create beautiful photos.

The biggest plus for an outdoor senior photo is how neutral the surroundings will be. There’s nothing to distract from the star of the show—you, the graduate!

3. On-Campus

As much as you probably want to run from the school gates and never look back, taking your senior year pictures on your campus will bring years of nostalgia when you look back in the future.

You could have a lot of fun with on-campus photos—especially if you studied at a prestigious school. Any photo with the school’s name, logo, or mascot in the background will be a great way to feel proud of where you came from. Bring that school spirit and wear a school logo t-shirt or sports uniform to tie it all together.

Taking a photo at the main entrance of the school is great for your senior photo. You’ll never have to walk through those doors again, but you’ll probably want to remember the feeling. And taking a photo sitting at your old desk is an opportunity you probably won’t have ever again.

4. Include the Parents

Chances are your parents and family had a great deal to do with getting you through school. Why not honor them in your photos?

Whether it’s a formal portrait of them standing behind you while sitting down or replicating the more emotional aspect of them letting go as you move on to your next venture, they’re likely to appreciate these photos as much as you will.

If your parents still have robes or uniforms from their school days, you can make it a family affair of school colors and show the pride across generations.

5. Enjoy a Hobby

If you were known in school for being in a club, sports team, sorority or fraternity, or simply doing an independent hobby that got you through those tough years, it’s a great idea to include that in your senior picture. You get to relive the fun memories you have outside of academia.

6. Invite Other People

If anyone special played a prominent role in your school years, it’s great to include them in your senior photos. Photos with your best friends dressed in caps and gowns will be timeless, or even getting your principal or favorite teacher to help straighten your cap will make an iconic photo—the last time you need their help.

7. Head Downtown

Whether or not your campus makes for great photos, your city surely will. Heading downtown for senior picture ideas will spark inspiration and memories, as well as remind you of where you came from if you move away after graduation.

Find iconic parts of your town, places you frequented as a student, or even just the most picturesque areas. You can make them the feature of the photo or keep them in the background, but all of these ideas will create timeless memories for your senior pics. 8. Toss the Cap

The iconic cap toss cannot be missed. Whether you’re graduating from high school, a 4-year college degree, or even post-grad, you’ve got to toss your cap.

The cap toss is a rite of passage, and you’re bound to see hundreds of your graduating classmates throwing their caps in the air as well. Whether you take this photo during your senior year photo shoot or on the day your graduate, it’s definitely not one to be missed.
