While not every animal can be a bloodthirsty menace, some of the creature designs are downright strange, but these weird monsters no doubt have a uniqueness factor. Encounters with these strange oddities can be more eccentric than dangerous, but that’s not to say some of them don’t still pose a serious threat.

8 Alit

The alit is a strange critter that appears in Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls Online. This dinosaur-like monster chases after players when encountered, although the short and stubby creature doesn’t pose too much danger. They are known to be hunted for their hides and their hearts are considered an Argonian delicacy. Running into one of these beasts is usually more of a nuisance than anything, but they still look remarkably strange when they run.

7 Lurker

The daedra of The Elder Scrolls have always had pretty cool designs, pulling from a wide range of looks across the games. The lurker is one of the stranger daedra to exist in the series, only appearing in the Dragonborn DLC. They may resemble The Creature from the Black Lagoon, but they are not to be messed with.

They have poisonous attacks as well as long-range and short-range attacks that can be incredibly hazardous for any unprepared adventurer. Regardless of their dangers, they still look like giant fish people.

6 Land Dreugh

The land dreugh is nasty crab monster that is not only hulking in size but packs a serious punch. They have appeared in several games throughout the franchise’s history and are thought to have once been an intelligent race of beings that devolved due to conflicts with the Dunmer. Whatever their origin, these creepy crawlers congregate in caves and alongside coasts and aimlessly chase after anybody that dares pass them by.

5 Ash Ghoul

This is perhaps the most shocking (and disturbing) creature design in Morrowind. The ash ghoul is a grotesque ash zombie with an unsettling worm tentacle protruding from its face. Found in the caves and the Red Mountain regions, these demonic creatures can be quite lethal thanks to their ability to give players the disease Ash Woe. They can be hard to distinguish from other ash zombies in the dark caves and ash-strewn wastes of the Red Mountain, but they still pose a serious threat.

4 Arvak

Arvak is one of the more unique creatures in The Elder Scrolls universe, appearing in the the Skyrim Dawnguard DLC as a mount obtained through a quest. The player has to find the horse’s skull in order to summon the undead creature. The horse looks like a skeletal demon with purple flames. It’s certainly a bit of an over-the-top look, even for an Elder Scrolls game.

3 Gnarl

Giant walking trees are not inherently bizarre for the fantasy genre, having appeared in stories since the genre’s genesis. Gnarls are the tree people of Oblivion, appearing in the Shivering Isles DLC.

They come in several variants with different designs, but all of them have an eeriness to their look. They are notable for their strong resistance to magic and aggressiveness in combat. Somehow, they fit in with the strange surreal landscape of the Shivering Isles.

2 Silt Strider

The silt strider has appeared in several Elder Scrolls games, but they are most well known as a popular form of transportation in Morrowind. These alien beings may be huge and hulking, but they are actually docile and tamed, acting more like a bus than a wild creature. They look like some sort of miniscule bug that was grown to giant size and used as a caravan. Their bizarre presence in Morrowind is in lieu of a fast travel option.

1 Fabricant

Fabricants are mechanical creations that can either be enemies or mounts depending on the variant. They first appear in the Tribunal DLC for Morrowind as robotic dinosaurs, but they subsequently have taken on many different shapes and forms, ranging from insects to simple automaton weapons. They stand out in The Elder Scrolls universe for being artificial and robotic in a world filled with natural magic and creatures. Fabricants have a steampunk sort of look to them, perhaps suggesting technology in the world of Tamriel is more advanced than one might think.
