Moving to modern times, WWE have had their share of legendary masked wrestlers too. Superstars like Rey Mysterio and Kane are bona fide legends in WWE and still wrestle to this day.

In this article, we take a look at some of the best masked wrestlers in WWE history without their masks on.

#8 The Hurricane

The Hurricane was one of the most entertaining characters in WWE during the early 2000’s. Shane Helms completely reinvented himself as the Superhero WWE needed. His tag-team with Rosey also found success and they won the WWE Tag-Team Championships.

The Hurricane’s best moment in WWE has to be when he eliminated The Rock in a Battle Royal to win it. Hurricane made his return to WWE as a surprise entrant in the 2018 Royal Rumble.

#7 El Torito

El Torito made his name in AAA working under the name Mascarita Dorada. He signed a developmental contract with WWE in 2013 and made his debut as El Torito, the mascot for Los Matadores.

El Torito also took part in the 2014 Royal Rumble but his career as a wrestler in WWE ever really took off. He was mostly used in comedy matches when used and worked mostly with Los Matadores. After Los Matadores got repackaged, El Torito was released from his WWE contract and he has since returned to the independent circuit.

#6 Psicosis

Psicosis is one of the Superstars on this list who had a lot more success in WCW than he did in WWE. In fact, Psicosis wrestled unmasked in WWE as part of a trio with Juventud Guerrera and Super Crazy - The Mexicools.

You don’t need me to tell you that these three cruiserweights were criminally underused in WWE. Psicosis was one of the best cruiserweights in WCW’s famed cruiserweight division and is a 2-time WCW Cruiserweight Champion.

#5 The Boogeyman

To be completely fair, The Boogeyman had face paint on and not really a mask, but I’ll still put him in this article. Boogeyman got into WWE through Tough Enough in 2004. Although he was soon cut from the competition for lying about his age, he was still invited to OVW.

What’s separated Boogeyman from other is his ability to eat worms and he soon made his debut on SmackDown in 2005. The Boogeyman’s most famous feud in WWE has to be his one with King Booker.

#4 Ultimo Dragon

Ultimo Drago is one of the best cruiserweights in wrestling history. His run in WWE was short but did include a number of great moments. Ultimo Dragon also had a much better run in WCW where he was a former 2-time Cruiserweight Champion and a 2-Time TV Champion.

The man behind the mask, Yoshihiro Asai, first made his name in Japan where he is a bonafide legend. He also invented the Asai Moonsault which is named after him.

#3 Sin Cara (Hunico)

After the first Sin Cara, Mistico, ended up as an abject failure in WWE and returned to Mexico, Hunico replaced him as SIn Cara.

Hunico has had a lot more success in WWE. The former Lucha Dragon is a former NXT Tag-Team Champion. However, since the Lucha Dragons broke up, Sin Cara has had a little trouble getting regular television time.

#2 Kane

If we look back at the Ruthless Aggression era, one of the biggest mistakes made during that period was unmasking Kane. That too, it was done on a throwaway RAW and not even on PPV.

Let’s be honest, Kane hasn’t had the same mystique since then. His unmasked run did work for a while but in the long run, it definitely hurt the Kane character overall.

#1 Rey Mysterio

After losing a “hair vs mask” tag-team match at Superbrawl IX against Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, Rey Mysterio was forced to unmask in 1999. He continued wrestling without his mask for the rest of his WCW career.

When WWE finally signed Rey Mysterio, they made the brilliant and sort of obvious decision to bring Mysterio back under his mask. He’s gone on the become a former WWE Champion and is a bonafide legend. He’s currently wresting on SmackDown Live and looks to be in the best shape of his career.
